Actor Shim Eun-kyung has been appointed as a jury member for the New Currents section at the 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF).
The organizers of the Busan International Film Festival announced on September 22 that they have appointed South Korean actor Shim Eun-kyung, Indian director Rima Das, and Chinese producer Shan Zuolong as the jury members for this year's New Currents Award.
Shim gained widespread recognition through Sunny (2011) and Miss Granny (2014), sweeping Best Actress awards at major domestic film ceremonies. She later expanded her career to Japan, where she made history by winning top acting honors at both the Japan Academy Film Prize and the Kinema Junpo Awards for her roles in The Journalist and Blue Period.
Indian director Rima Das is a filmmaker who has explored the relationship between humans and nature, resilience, and dreams through critically acclaimed works invited to numerous major international film festivals. Her credits include Village Rockstars (2017), Village Rockstars 2 (2024), and Not a Hero (2026), which earned her the Kim Jiseok Award at the Busan International Film Festival and a Special Mention for the Generation Kplus Crystal Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Chinese producer Shan Zuolong has won awards at the Cannes Film Festival, Venice International Film Festival, and Berlin International Film Festival for Love Is a Gun (directed by Lee Hong-ki, 2023) and The Botanist (directed by Jing Yi, 2025). He also produced Kaili Blues director Bi Gan's Resurrected (2025), which won the Artistic Contribution Award at the Busan Awards, the Busan International Film Festival's inaugural competition section, last year.
The New Currents Award selects one feature film from the first or second features of emerging Asian directors screened in the competition and Vision sections, presenting a cash prize of 20 million won.
Meanwhile, the 31st Busan International Film Festival will run for ten days from October 6 (Tue) to October 15 (Thu) around the Cinema Center.
