Artificial intelligence (AI) startup Anthropic has reportedly built a biology laboratory in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Eric Kauderer-Abrams, head of biology at Anthropic, officially confirmed the existence of the in-house laboratory during an interview with Reuters on the 19th (local time), stating, "The ultimate test in conducting biological research is actual laboratory work."
He emphasized, "Our company's mission is to develop powerful AI to benefit the world. We see the biggest opportunities in the life sciences, and this is the motivation behind everything we do."
However, Anthropic plans to avoid direct commercial competition with traditional pharmaceutical companies.
"We do not compete with pharmaceutical and biotech companies," he said, explaining that the company will focus on the stages prior to clinical trials rather than advancing to them.
The focus will primarily be on discovering treatments for neglected diseases that pharmaceutical companies have largely overlooked.
Anthropic is also building a system that allows its AI model, Claude, to directly control robotic equipment within the laboratory.
Kauderer-Abrams added that the company is mindful of concerns and risks that AI models could be misused for developing biological weapons, and that it will implement safety measures in parallel.
"We are balancing improving models to accelerate drug discovery with deploying them carefully to mitigate risks," he explained.
Previously, Anthropic has rapidly expanded its related ecosystem by introducing 'Claude for Science', a tool for scientists, and acquiring biotech firm Coefficient Bio.
It also appointed Novartis CEO Vas Narasimhan to its board of directors and recruited John Jumper, former senior staff research scientist at Google DeepMind who co-developed the protein structure prediction AI 'AlphaFold' and won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, last July.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dario Amodei has also previously revealed personal experiences of losing his father to illness several years ago, showing a strong commitment to life sciences research.
