Water supply was cut off for more than 12 hours at a large apartment complex comprising about 5,000 households in Jangan-gu, Suwon, Gyeonggi Province.
According to the city of Suwon and the Jangan District Office, numerous reports from residents stating that "tap water smells like thinner" began coming in from around 9:40 a.m. yesterday (September 19).
The apartment management office announced, "It is presumed that the odor of thinner seeped into the tap water during epoxy waterproofing work on the water tank," suspended the water supply, and proceeded to clean the water tank.
However, as the water outage continued for over 12 hours, residents experienced severe inconvenience.
The city of Suwon provided emergency water supplies using water tanker trucks and supplied utility water for residents to use at a nearby community service center.
The apartment management office finished cleaning the water tank and resumed water supply starting around midnight, but the water remains unfit for drinking, according to reports.
An official from Jangan District stated, "The waterworks office has conducted water quality tests on the apartment complex," adding, "We were informed that it will take three to four weeks for the results to come out."
