South Korean national team striker Oh Hyun-gyu, who faced the risk of being relegated to a substitute role at Turkish professional football club Besiktas, played a full match for the first time in a while and recorded his first assist of the league season.
Starting in the fifth round home match of the Süper Lig against Erzurumspor held at Tüpraş Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey, today (September 12), Oh assisted on Leandro Trossard's additional goal in the 27th minute of the first half.
After receiving a pass from Trossard on the left flank and dribbling forward, Oh delivered the ball back to Trossard, who was rushing toward the goalmouth, and Trossard found the back of the net with a right-footed sliding shot.
With striker Dusan Vlahović, formerly of Italian powerhouse Juventus, settling in at Besiktas and narrowing Oh's opportunities, Oh created a turning point by recording his first attacking point in the league.
This season, Oh has started only two league matches and appeared in three as a substitute.
In the previous fourth-round match against Fenerbahçe, he played for only about five minutes as a substitute.
This marks his first full-match appearance in the league.
Oh was given the chance to start after Vlahović was handed a one-match suspension for making an insulting gesture in the previous game, ruling him out for today's match.
Vlahović has been living up to his reputation by scoring four goals in the league alone.
Oh has now recorded one goal and two assists in official matches, including one goal and one assist in the UEFA Europa League qualifiers.
Trossard, who moved to Besiktas from Arsenal (England), scored his debut goal courtesy of Oh's assist.
Having taken the lead in the 21st minute of the first half with Emirhan Topçu's opening goal, Besiktas secured a comfortable 3-0 victory, adding the second goal combined by Oh and Trossard along with Ilhan Fakılı's-sealing goal in the 36th minute of the second half.
Besiktas surpassed Galatasaray, who has played one fewer game, to leap to the top of the league standings (12 points, 4 wins, 1 loss).
