At least 10 people were killed and 64 others were injured when fireworks materials exploded during a religious festival in Temascalcingo, in the central Mexican state of Mexico, the Associated Press reported on September 6 (local time).
According to authorities, the explosion occurred on the night of the 5th while hundreds of residents were waiting to watch a fireworks display for a patron saint festival held at a church in Temascalcingo.
The local bishop stated that two priests were among the injured.
The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined, and the prosecutors' office of the state of Mexico has launched an investigation.
Footage of the scene uploaded to social media showed dozens of people searching for survivors through smoke and debris immediately after the explosion.
AP explained that fireworks-related explosions frequently occur in Mexico because fireworks are widely used during street festivals and religious events.
