Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Kim Yoon-duk and Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, who met again over the issue of supplying housing in Yongsan Park, continued their war of words even after the meeting.
Minister Kim wrote on his Facebook page this afternoon (the 26th), "Although we ultimately failed to reach an agreement, I welcome the Seoul Metropolitan Government's stance to review greenbelt deregulation with an open mind," adding, "I hope that more progressive discussions will continue at our next meeting."
In particular, Minister Kim stated, "I urge the Seoul Metropolitan Government," and added, "We must not stick to the 'Yongsan impossibility argument' that houses can absolute not be built within the returned U.S. military base in Yongsan under any circumstances."
The Seoul Metropolitan Government immediately issued a statement in response.
The city explained, "Our review of greenbelt areas was intended on the premise that the government withdraws its policy to supply housing within Yongsan Park, meaning we could consider lifting the designation on certain greenbelt areas that have already been damaged and have low preservation value."
It added, "If the government drops its unrealistic proposal for Yongsan Park, we are fully prepared to discuss rational measures together to expand housing supply in Seoul, including alternative sites such as the Tancheon Water Reclamation Center and damaged greenbelt areas."
Minister Kim and Mayor Oh plan to meet again next week to continue consultations.
