Police announced that a month-long intensive campaign to protect victims of relational crimes resulted in a significant increase in arrests, detentions, and electronic monitoring decisions.
The Korean National Police Agency announced today (the 4th) that it operated a four-week intensive campaign period from June 29 to July 24, which led to an increase in arrests, detentions, and electronic device attachment decisions compared to the period from January to May of this year.
This intensive campaign was conducted by strengthening the investigative command of division-level managers at provincial police agencies and police stations to prevent relational crimes—such as stalking, domestic violence, and dating violence—from escalating into violent crimes.
During the intensive campaign period, provincial police agencies directed investigations into 4,372 relational crime cases and directly took over and investigated 174 cases.
Compared to the intensive campaign period of the previous year, the daily average of investigative commands increased by 162.4% (from 64.1 to 168.2 cases), and case transfers increased by 252.6% (from 1.9 to 6.7 cases).
Police stations implemented protective measures for 5,159 victims and responded to prevent relational crimes from escalating into violent crimes under the leadership of division heads, including 4,338 investigative commands, the police explained.
In particular, the daily average number of decisions for arrest, detention, and electronic device attachment surged by 67.5%, from 8.3 cases between January and May of this year to 13.9 cases during the intensive campaign period.
Notable cases included a provincial police agency directly investigating a case where a suspect continuously stalked a victim and their family after a breakup and secured an electronic device attachment decision, as well as the arrest of a suspect who resumed stalking a former romantic partner after being released from prison, tracked down through CCTV analysis and emergency telecommunication investigations.
The Korean National Police Agency emphasized, "We will actively reward division-level managers who achieved excellent results by proactively identifying the risk and sensitivity of cases and providing meticulous investigative command, and we will do our utmost to isolate perpetrators and protect victims through tight case management, including operating regular intensive campaign periods in the future."
