Amid the alternating cycle of monsoon rain and heatwaves, residents in the central regions should prepare for heavy downpours and strong winds tonight, July 14. Rain began to intensify across Seoul and the northern Gyeonggi Province starting during the evening commute. We now go to our reporter stationed in Gwanghwamun.
Kwon Min-kyu, it seems the heavy rain must have caused significant inconvenience for commuters. What is the situation like there now?
[Reporter]
Yes, here at the Sejong-daero intersection in Gwanghwamun, rain began to fall around 6 p.m. as office workers started their commute home.
Although the rain has weakened significantly, you can still see citizens holding tightly onto their umbrellas.
The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasted that between 30 and up to 100 millimeters of monsoon rain will fall across Seoul and the metropolitan area from 6 p.m. today through tomorrow.
As is characteristic of this monsoon season, the rain is falling in localized and sporadic bursts, and with very strong winds also in the forecast, I urge everyone to take extra precautions for safety.

I understand that particularly heavy rain is also expected in the northern Gyeonggi region?
[Reporter]
Yes, that is correct.
The Korea Meteorological Administration predicts that up to 120 millimeters of rain will fall in northern Gyeonggi Province, and 100 millimeters, accompanied by strong winds, is expected in the inland areas of northern Gangwon Province.
Heavy rain warnings have been issued for Cheorwon and Hwacheon in Gangwon Province, as well as parts of northern and southern Gyeonggi Province and Incheon, where significant rainfall is expected.
As of 3 p.m. today, the Korea Forest Service has upgraded the landslide crisis alert for Gangwon and Gyeonggi provinces to the second level, which is Caution.
With heavy rain also expected in North Korea, water levels in the Imjin and Hantan rivers could rise rapidly, so residents in nearby areas should remain vigilant to prevent any damage.
The rain clouds currently bringing heavy precipitation to the metropolitan area are expected to gradually move southward toward the Chungcheong and Jeolla provinces by midnight.
