Amid ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran over control of the Strait of Hormuz, despite the signing of a post-war memorandum of understanding, airstrike damage has now been reported in the northeastern region of Iran.
On July 9 (local time), Reuters reported, citing local media, that a railway bridge in northeastern Iran had been damaged by an airstrike. CNN also reported, citing Iran's state-run IRIB broadcaster, that a railway bridge on the outskirts of Aq Qala in Golestan Province, northeastern Iran, had been targeted by the U.S. military.
Previously, Iran had repeatedly attacked merchant vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, claiming they had deviated from designated routes. In response, the U.S. vowed to hold Iran accountable, launching airstrikes over two days starting July 7 against various Iranian positions in the south, located in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
Iran's semi-official Fars News Agency reported yesterday that several powerful explosions were heard in the port city of Bandar Abbas in south-central Iran and in Sirik, near the eastern exit of the strait. It further explained that damage had also occurred in Chabahar, a port city on the coast of the Gulf of Oman in southeastern Iran.
