'The Odyssey' Surpasses 10 Million Moviegoers in 33 Days in Korea

Director Christopher Nolan's film "The Odyssey" has surpassed 10 million moviegoers.

According to the Korean Film Council's integrated ticketing computer network on the 7th, "The Odyssey" drew 698,395 viewers nationwide from the 4th to the 6th, taking the number one spot at the weekend box office for five consecutive weeks. Its cumulative audience count reached 10,027,997.

Released on August 5th, "The Odyssey" successfully reached the 10 million viewer milestone on the 6th, which was its 33rd day in theaters. This marks director Christopher Nolan's second time hitting the 10 million mark in South Korea following "Interstellar" (2014). Following "The King's Warden" (16.91 million), "The Odyssey" is the second film to mobilize 10 million moviegoers this year.

This is the tenth foreign film in box office history to reach 10 million viewers. "The Odyssey" follows "Avengers: Endgame" (2019), "Frozen II" (2019), "Avatar" (2009), "Aladdin" (2019), "Avengers: Infinity War" (2018), "Avatar: The Way of Water" (2022), "Avengers: Age of Ultron" (2015), "Frozen" (2014), and "Interstellar" (2014).

Based on the ancient Greek epic "The Odyssey" by the poet Homer, the film depicts the 10-year adventure of the hero Odysseus (played by Matt Damon) trying to return to his hometown of Ithaca after the Trojan War. The cast includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Zendaya, among others.

This was director Nolan's new project released three years after his Academy Best Picture winner "Oppenheimer" (2023). As the first feature film shot entirely with IMAX cameras, it sparked a craze for IMAX viewing in the country.
