Lee Chang-dong's 'Possible Love' Sets Theatrical and Netflix Release Dates Aiming for the Oscars

The film "Possible Love" has revealed its theatrical and Netflix release schedules, entering full preparation for its premiere.

Netflix announced on the 28th that "Possible Love" will be released in Korean theaters on September 23 before meeting global viewers via Netflix on November 6.

"Possible Love" tells the story of two couples—a laid-off worker and his wife, and a documentary director and her husband—who meet to produce a documentary and face their different lives and hidden desires. It is a highly anticipated new work by Lee Chang-dong, representing the South Korean film industry, coming eight years after his last film, and stars Seol Kyung-gu, Jeon Do-yeon, Zo In-sung, and Cho Yeo-jeong.

The rare theatrical release for the Netflix film "Possible Love" is a strategic move targeting next year's Academy Awards. To meet the eligibility requirements for Academy submission, a film must have a two-week theatrical release prior to its OTT release.

This is the same approach used by Netflix films such as "Frankenstein", "Maestro", and "The Irishman" when they participated in the Oscar race following theatrical runs. For domestic audiences, it is also a great opportunity to experience director Lee Chang-dong's new work in theaters first.

Interest in "Possible Love" is not limited to domestic audiences. It has been invited to the competition section of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, which opens on September 2. "Possible Love" will hold its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival prior to its theatrical release. Through this film festival, it aims to win major prizes including the Golden Lion, the festival's grand prix.

Along with revealing the theatrical release and streaming dates, Netflix released the poster for "Possible Love" on this day. Against a twilight sky with the moon rising under wind-swept trees, the poster draws attention with "Mi-ok" (Jeon Do-yeon) and "Ye-ji" (Cho Yeo-jeong) holding a camera. The scene where "Ye-ji", who is filming a documentary about a laid-off worker, and "Mi-ok", the wife of the laid-off worker, look at each other as if discovering one another creates an unusual atmosphere and tension, stimulating curiosity about what kind of story will unfold in "Possible Love".

"Possible Love" will be released in theaters on September 23 and on Netflix on November 6.
