Another Accident Involving Elderly Driver: Vehicle Crashes Amid Smoke
Just one day after a vehicle driven by a person in their 70s plowed into a sidewalk in Busan, leaving five people dead or injured, another accident involving an elderly driver has occurred.
KNN reporter Ha Young-kwang has the story.

Pedestrians walking on the street spot something and scramble to get away.
A vehicle is then seen speeding in reverse down a slope, emitting black smoke, before striking two other vehicles.
Three people, including the driver of a motorcycle that was hit earlier, were injured and transported to a hospital.
[Victim: It sounded like a building collapsing. A loud 'bang.' It was immense. Like the sound of dynamite exploding in the military? There are many pedestrians here, and it is a very dangerous road (due to the steep incline).]
This is the scene of the accident. The vehicle finally came to a stop after colliding with two cars and slamming into a utility pole.
The impact of the crash left the pedestrian safety railing completely mangled, and the damaged utility pole caused a power outage in the surrounding area.
It is reported that the driver, identified as A, told police that the vehicle's engine suddenly shut off.
[Park Geun-woo/Chief of Traffic Division, Busan Saha Police Station: We will analyze the Event Data Recorder (EDR) of the vehicle and secure additional CCTV footage from around the scene to determine the exact cause of the accident.]
This accident occurred just one day after an elderly driver in their 70s drove onto a sidewalk in Daeyeon-dong, Busan, resulting in five casualties.
In Busan, the proportion of elderly drivers aged 65 and older stands at 16.6%, the highest level in the country.
The rate of traffic accidents caused by elderly drivers is also increasing every year.
With elderly driver accidents occurring one after another, there are calls for institutional improvements to more reliably verify driving ability.
