A CEO in his 60s who operated two companies and embezzled funds from one to pay investors of the other has been sentenced to prison.

The Cheongju District Court's Criminal Division 22 (Presiding Judge Han Sang-won) announced on June 16 that it sentenced the CEO, identified as A, to four years in prison for embezzlement under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment, etc. of Specific Economic Crimes.

A was indicted on charges of embezzling approximately 4.4 billion won from company accounts across 81 transactions over a three-year period starting in 2016 while operating two real estate development firms.

Investigations revealed that A withdrew money from the account of one development firm to pay dividends to investors of the other firm.

It was also determined that some of the funds were used to pay off A's personal debts.

The court stated, "Given the method and circumstances of the crime, as well as the amount embezzled, the defendant's responsibility is heavy and the culpability is high."

The court further ruled, "However, the sentence was determined by taking into account that the embezzlement amount appears to have grown due to the reckless management of company funds without clear separation, and that it is difficult to conclude that all funds were used for personal gain, as a significant portion was paid to investors."
