Starting in 2028, the World Championships for short track, speed skating, and figure skating will be held in a single host city.
The International Skating Union (ISU) announced today (June 11) at its 60th Ordinary Congress in Tenerife, Spain, that it has decided to host the 2028 World Championships for each discipline in Beijing, China.
Beijing will host the three major championships—short track, speed skating, and figure skating—as well as the World Synchronized Skating Championships, which is not an official Olympic event, and the ISU Skating Awards.
"We will create a special festival where all ice sports athletes, fans, media, and stakeholders can gather," said ISU President Kim Jae-youl. "The 2028 combined World Championships will be a significant ice sports event leading up to the 2030 Alps Winter Olympics."
Details regarding the event schedule will be released at a later date.
Additionally, the ISU announced on this day that it will increase prize money for international competitions and expand financial support for member nations.
Following this decision, the total prize money for ISU international competitions will increase from $5.4 million (approximately 8.5 billion won) in the 2025-2026 season to $11.1 million (16.9 billion won) in the 2026-2027 season.
The ISU plans to further increase the amount to $12 million (18.3 billion won) for the 2027-2028 season.
"Athletes are at the heart of ice sports," President Kim stated. "The decision to increase prize money reflects our commitment to investing in the future of ice sports."
Financial support for member nations to participate in competitions has also been significantly increased from the existing $2.4 million (3.7 billion won) to $4.5 million (6.9 billion won).
The ISU has significantly expanded its financial scale based on recent investment successes.
Since being elected as the first non-European ISU President at the congress in June 2022, President Kim has built a new revenue-generating model by recruiting key marketing professionals who previously worked at FIFA and the NBA.
"Through our investment strategy, we have generated over $80 million (122 billion won) in additional revenue," the ISU stated. "Based on this, we are now able to expand support for athletes and member nations."
