National Supercomputer No. 6, named "Hangang," which is evaluated to have performance ranking among the top 10 supercomputers in the world, is set to begin operations in December.
The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) announced that they held the launching ceremony for Hangang today (November 2) at the KISTI headquarters in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon.
In addition to supporting the CPU-based large-scale computational science and simulation research that previous supercomputers supported, No. 6 is an infrastructure that supports AI-based scientific research utilizing the latest graphics processing units (GPUs).
It is equipped with 8,496 latest GPUs, including the NVIDIA GH200, and 9,936 CPUs.
The GH200 is an integrated accelerator chip that enhances data processing efficiency by adding the Grace CPU to the existing H100.
The Ministry of Science and ICT stated that it is expected to be ranked in the top 10 global supercomputer performance rankings to be announced at the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis (SC2026) early this month.
Supercomputer No. 6 will focus on supporting national strategic research and development (R&D) such as K-Moonshot, while also backing research by universities and government-funded research institutes, as well as corporate technology development.
It has been operating in a pilot service since September, and the official service will launch on November 16.
Around 200 people from academia, research institutes, industry, and related organizations attended the event. KISTI President Lee Sik stated, "Based on our past experience in operating supercomputers, we will do our utmost to ensure stable operation and user support so that No. 6 'Hangang' can serve as a foundation supporting ambitious research by domestic researchers."
Kim Seong-soo, head of the Research and Development Policy Office, said, "Hangang is a core foundation that will drive new scientific discoveries by supporting the convergence of AI and science and technology."
