A teenager has been apprehended by the police for using a macro program to bulk-purchase professional baseball postseason tickets and reselling them at up to six times their original price.
The Cyber Investigation Unit of the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency announced that it has apprehended a teenager, identified as A, on charges of illicitly purchasing and selling tickets.
Over the course of two days starting from October 15, A used a macro program to purchase around 50 tickets across 12 transactions on the official postseason ticketing platform.
A macro is a program that automatically repeats designated commands to rapidly book items such as concert or event tickets.
A resold the acquired tickets through secondhand trading platforms across nine transactions at prices ranging from three to six times the original face value.
Investigations revealed that the illicit profits pocketed through this scheme amounted to approximately 6 million won.
The police investigation was initiated at the request of the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation.
The police plan to notify the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the investigation results to ensure follow-up measures, such as the imposition of penalty surcharges, are taken.
Notably, following the enforcement of the revised National Sports Promotion Act since August 28, individuals can face punishment for habitually or commercially reselling tickets above face value without the seller's consent, even if a macro program was not used.
