The Kospi surged by more than 4% in early trading today (the 27th), triggering a buy-side sidecar.
As of 11:00 a.m. today, the Kospi stands at 5,709.27, up 239.8 points, or 4.38%, from the previous session.
The index opened at 5,658.65, up 189.18 points or 3.46%, and has gradually expanded its gains, hovering around the 5,700 mark.
Foreign investors are net buyers at 334 billion won, while retail investors are net sellers at 338 billion won and institutional investors at 5 billion won.
In the Kospi 200 futures market, foreign investors are also in a net buying position of 106 billion won, while retail investors and institutional investors are net sellers at 18 billion won and 104 billion won, respectively.
Analysts attribute the revival in market sentiment to news that Anthropic, the developer of the U.S. AI model Claude, has filed for an initial public offering.
Driven by expectations of a semiconductor tailwind, Samsung Electronics is up by 5% and SK hynix by over 7%.
SK Telecom, which made an early investment of 100 million dollars in Anthropic, is rising by around 6%.
The Kosdaq also opened up 15.88 points, or 2.18%, at 743.09 and is maintaining its upward trend.
Riding on this semiconductor-driven tailwind, along with increases in government consumption and facility investment, South Korea's economy achieved surprise growth in the third quarter of this year.
The Bank of Korea announced that the real gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate for the third quarter came in at 1.0%.
This figure is more than three times higher than the BOK's third-quarter growth forecast of 0.3% presented in August.
This surprise growth is attributed to a 2.3% increase in exports, led primarily by semiconductors.
Consequently, the BOK's initial annual growth forecast of 3.3% is expected to be revised upward significantly, backed by the third-quarter surprise growth.
