Hacking damage appears to be spreading across the financial sector once again. Personal information of some 400 customers has been leaked from Saemaul Geumgo, while OK Savings Bank has also reported a potential leak affecting 180 individuals.

Reporter Choi Seung-hun has the details.

This is an apology posted on the website of the National Credit Union Federation of Korea (Saemaul Geumgo) under the name of its chief executive officer.

It stated that customers' personal information was leaked and disclosed 12 categories of leaked data.

The leaked information includes names, phone numbers, addresses, encrypted resident registration numbers, account numbers, and balances.

Saemaul Geumgo announced that it has sent text messages to the affected customers and will fully compensate for any damages incurred.

It was confirmed that hackers attacked a vulnerability in a web page used by mutual aid insurance customers, rather than the federation's main homepage, after 2:00 PM on October 10.

The National Credit Union Federation of Korea identified the leak on the afternoon of October 12, two days later.

The incident is presumed to have used a method similar to recent successive financial sector hacks that exploited external business web pages as a hacking route.

However, the IP address used in this hacking attack is known to be different from the 28 addresses identified as having been used in previous hacking attacks.

As Saemaul Geumgo temporarily suspended its insurance app and web services to prevent additional damage, some customers who did not receive prior notice expressed anxiety.

An attempted attack on a loan application web page was also detected at OK Savings Bank on October 12.

The bank blocked its information lookup system and reported to the Financial Supervisory Service that personal information of 183 customers may have been leaked.

Stating that the incident is identified as being similar to recent financial sector hacks, the bank announced that it is investigating whether an actual information leak occurred together with an external security firm.
