The Korea Media and Communications Commission (KMCC) visited an artificial intelligence (AI) research and development (R&D) site in the broadcasting and media sector to examine the status of technology development and listen to feedback from researchers in the field.

On September 17, the KMCC and the Institute of Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP) visited broadcast media company GeminiSoft to hold a "Broadcasting and Media AI Developers Roundtable."

Around 20 officials attended the meeting, including KMCC Chairperson Kim Jong-cheol, representatives from broadcasting companies such as SBS, KBS, and MBC Chungbuk, and researchers from institutions including the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), and the Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI).

Participants discussed the current status and future applications of technologies that search, generate, and edit videos through natural language conversation, as well as technologies that recommend and create tailored content by analyzing viewing history and content context.

During the meeting, researchers cited securing data and computing resources, conducting field demonstrations utilizing broadcasters and platforms, and commercializing technologies as key challenges.

Chairperson Kim stated that the commission would reflect field feedback in its R&D policies and actively support the on-site application of developed technologies in broadcasting and their commercialization.

The KMCC is pursuing the "Digital Media Innovation Technology Development" project, investing 72.7 billion won from this year through 2030.
