Director Hong Sang-soo's 35th feature film and actor Kim Minhee's starring vehicle "Nowhere to Lay My Eyes" has released its poster and trailer.
In the released poster, Kim Minhee is seen sitting comfortably in a hammock with her eyes closed. The roughly one-minute trailer features Kim Minhee quietly walking along a stone wall path in Jeju Island without background music, accompanied by her voiceover. She says, "I went out for a walk to see the pond before leaving. It was a clear and pleasant day."
"Nowhere to Lay My Eyes" follows the story of Sanghee (played by Kim Minhee), who spent most of her time with her grandparents after her parents' divorce, as she visits her mother who has settled in Jeju Island with her younger brother. Spending three days and two nights with her mother whom she faces after ten years, her stepfather who is a documentary director, and her half-brother who has just started painting, she encounters facts she did not know, hard-to-accept advice, and cheap compliments. The runtime is 72 minutes.
Kim Minhee stars as Sanghee, joined by Choi Myung-gil, Kwon Hae-hyo, Shin Seok-ho, and Park Mi-so. Director Hong Sang-soo took charge of production, screenplay, direction, cinematography, sound recording, editing, and music, while Kim Minhee was also credited as production manager.
The film was invited to the international competition section of the 79th Locarno Film Festival, where it won the Best Director award, the Best Performance award for Kim Minhee, and the Ecumenical Jury Prize.
The jury explained their reason for selecting the Best Director award, stating, "When the utmost mastery in dealing with all the elements of a film meets the highest freedom, the utmost simplicity, and the highest intelligence, the result is a fascinating and deeply inspiring fable that questions our relationship with the world, art, others, and ourselves." Regarding Kim Minhee, they described her as "an actor capable of expressing all facets of human existence with elegance and subtlety," explaining the background behind her winning her second Best Performance award.
Previously, attending the Locarno Film Festival screening and Q&A session held on August 13 local time, Kim Minhee explained, "Even while shooting the film, the baby went along to the set, so I had to breastfeed and make baby food. I was extremely busy, waking up first to finish all the preparations for the baby before getting ready for the film. My previous mindset of resolving and intending to focus solely on films disappeared, and it felt very healthy to naturally finish all preparations for the baby first and then do my best for the film."
"Nowhere to Lay My Eyes" is scheduled to be released domestically on October 21.
