"The Scandal" (written by Lee Seung-young and Ahn Hye-song, directed by Jung Ji-woo) tells the story of Lady Cho (played by Son Ye-jin), a woman with exceptional talents far too great to be confined merely to the role of a Joseon-era woman, and Cho-won (played by Ji Changwook), the greatest romantic in Joseon, as they engage in a bold and dangerous love bet, along with Hee-yeon (played by Nana), a woman entangled in that wager.
The press stills released on the 3rd feature Lady Cho sitting demurely in the main quarters, Cho-won looking at a woman with a sly expression, and Hee-yeon wearing hemp clothing with a gaunt face. These images showcase the three individuals' different circumstances living in a Joseon bound by taboos, heightening curiosity about the story.
The unusual atmosphere between Lady Cho and Cho-won, who are cousins and the masterminds behind the bet, also draws attention. Curiosity is sparked by Cho-won deliberately approaching Hee-yeon to win the bet, and Hee-yeon's precarious skinship as she gradually wavers while trying to push him away. Furthermore, the subtle sense of solidarity formed between Lady Cho, who holds the upper hand in the bet, and Hee-yeon as they share the sorrows of being women in the Joseon era serves as another key point to watch.
In particular, the original mise-en-scene infused with traditional Korean beauty, such as the alluring colors of hanbok and modern props that break the mold of historical dramas, significantly boosts visual immersion.
Combining a classic story reinterpreted from a modern perspective, the powerful chemistry among Son Ye-jin, Ji Changwook, and Nana, and director Jung Ji-woo's delicate direction, the Netflix series "The Scandal" consists of eight episodes and will be released on Friday the 18th.
