Prosecutors have demanded the death penalty—the maximum sentence under the law—for Jang Yoon-gi, who is on trial for murdering a high school student in Gwangju. The sentencing for Jang is scheduled to take place on the 30th of this month at the Gwangju District Court.

Prosecutors demanded the death penalty during the fourth trial hearing for Jang Yoon-gi.
They determined that there is a high risk of recidivism if he returns to society and that the suffering inflicted on the victims is immense.
This comes about four months after Jang murdered the late Lee Chae-won on May 5.
In court, Jang admitted to most of the charges, including dragging the victim away with the intent to sexually assault her and murdering her when things did not go as planned.
However, regarding a 40-centimeter-long cable tie found in the front passenger seat of the vehicle, he denied having prepared it for the purpose of committing the crime.
Jang is also accused of confining and sexually assaulting a woman in her 20s who was a part-time job colleague on May 3, two days before the murder, as well as illegally filming female students seven times last year while working as a public service worker.
Prior to the trial, the victim's bereaved family held a picket protest urging strict punishment.
Some 50,000 people also signed a petition calling for the maximum legal sentence to be handed down.
[Kim Moon-seok / Legal Representative and Attorney for the Bereaved Family: In the end, by denying his intentions one by one down to the smallest details and effectively maintaining a stance that he is unfairly treated, I believe the death penalty should rightfully be demanded, and that is the right path.]
The court will hold the sentencing hearing for Jang at 2:00 PM on the 30th.
