Christopher Nolan Reveals Why He Stands Firm on Theatrical Releases Amid Streaming Era

Director Christopher Nolan, widely known as Hollywood's quintessential theatrical purist, has shared his cinematic philosophy emphasizing the true meaning of cinema.

Attending a press conference for "The Odyssey" held on the morning of the 3rd at the Four Seasons Hotel in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, Nolan addressed why he continues to advocate for theatrical films amidst the tectonic shifts in the film industry driven by the rapid rise of streaming platforms. He stated, "The unique characteristic of a theater is sharing and empathizing with the emotions of a film alongside other audience members. It is both the most personal and collective experience. I believe this is a powerful distinguishing feature that other mediums cannot offer. Of course, films can be accessed through other channels, but I believe the best way to define a new film is through the theatrical experience."

Although Nolan began his filmmaking career during the celluloid era, he understands the changes in the film industry led by digital technology and AI better than anyone. Yet, despite the continuous temptations of streaming platforms, he maintains his commitment to theatrical cinema.

His new film "The Odyssey" is the first in film history to be shot entirely on IMAX 70mm film cameras. In addition, the one-eyed monster Polyphemus appearing in the film was reportedly brought to life by constructing an actual 6-meter model rather than using CGI.

Regarding "The Odyssey," he shared, "I made it with the feeling of directly inviting audiences into Odysseus's journey," adding, "I created it so that audiences can feel like they are climbing mountains and exploring the sea alongside Odysseus, and I hope you will experience it together with others in a theater."

As for the message delivered by the work, rather than defining it himself, he hopes audiences will enjoy it through their own individual perspectives. Nolan stated, "I hope audiences naturally accept the film and come up with the answers they want on their own. I made it so that even audiences who are not very familiar with the original story can fully immerse themselves and enjoy it," and repeatedly recommended theatrical viewing, saying, "Basically, this film is a spectacular and thrilling adventure story. I hope many people will enjoy this film as entertainment in theaters."

"The Odyssey" depicts the events that unfold as the hero Odysseus (Matt Damon), who led the ten-year Trojan War to victory, embarks on a journey to return to his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and son Telemachus (Tom Holland), who are waiting for him amid the absence of a king. It is an epic saga based on Homer's "The Odyssey."

The work premiered first on July 17 in 69 countries worldwide, including North America, the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Australia, and India, taking first place at the box office. Recording a global opening box office gross of 264.06 million US dollars (approx. 390.8 billion won), it set the highest global opening record ever for a film directed by Christopher Nolan. Furthermore, it continues a record-breaking box office run, surpassing 900 million dollars in worldwide earnings in just three weeks since its release.

It is scheduled to open in domestic theaters on the 5th.
