At approximately 12:30 p.m. today (July 9), the retaining wall of a villa in Paengseong-eup, Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, collapsed due to sudden, intense rainfall.
While there were no injuries, the ground subsided, and the city of Pyeongtaek evacuated villa residents to a nearby senior citizens' center due to concerns over further collapses.
Around the same time, near the Anhyeon Intersection in Anhyeon-dong, Siheung, Gyeonggi Province, a road was flooded, leaving four vehicles submerged.
[Interview: Official from Siheung Fire Station] : The initial report stated that there were two people inside a vehicle and that water was rising. When we arrived, we found that other vehicles were also stranded, so it seems we ended up rescuing more people.
The four people trapped in the vehicles were rescued by responding firefighters.
In Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, a factory ceiling collapsed due to the heavy downpour, and fire authorities were dispatched after reports of a gas smell were received.
In Osan, heavy rain also led to the closure of the Gwoldong Underpass starting at 1:00 p.m.
As of 3:30 p.m., a total of 223 reports of rain-related damage have been filed in the southern Gyeonggi region alone.
There have been numerous reports of facility damage, including 122 cases of traffic light malfunctions and 37 cases of road flooding, but no injuries have been reported.
In Seoul, as localized monsoon rain fell, the water level of Dorimcheon Stream rose near Sindaebang Station, Sillim Station, and Boramae Station, leading to the issuance of the first flood advisory of the year, which was lifted after about two and a half hours.
