Live Ammunition Found at Jeju Airport Security Checkpoint: Police Officer Under Investigation

Police have launched an investigation after live ammunition was discovered during a security screening at Jeju International Airport.

The individual in possession of the ammunition has been identified as an active-duty police officer working in another region.

According to the Jeju Seobu Police Station and other authorities, two rounds of live ammunition were found in the bag of a passenger passing through the Jeju Airport security checkpoint at approximately 8:40 p.m. on June 28, as they were attempting to board a flight to Gimpo.

Police, who were dispatched following a report from airport authorities, confiscated the ammunition and requested a detailed analysis from the National Forensic Service to confirm whether the rounds were live.

The passenger carrying the ammunition was identified as an active-duty police officer.

The officer, in his 30s, is reportedly stationed in a region other than Jeju, and no firearm has been recovered yet.

As of now, no connection to terrorism or other crimes has been identified, and there were no significant disruptions to flight operations.

However, it has been confirmed that the officer also passed through security with the ammunition in his possession when traveling from Gimpo Airport to Jeju Airport, raising concerns about potential lapses in airport security screening procedures.

The police have booked the officer on charges of violating the Act on the Safety Management of Guns, Swords, Explosives, etc., and plan to investigate how he came to possess the live ammunition.

Previously, in March, a passenger in his 30s also passed through security at Gimhae Airport with live ammunition and boarded a flight to Jeju.

That individual was caught during a security screening at Jeju Airport while attempting to return to Gimhae after his stay in Jeju.

Although the ammunition found at that time was later confirmed by investigation to be a replica, the fact that it had passed through Gimhae Airport security sparked controversy over security loopholes at the time.
