A group of individuals who staged a false criminal complaint to avoid being transferred to another prison has been caught following a supplementary investigation by the prosecution.

The Criminal Division 2 of the Uijeongbu District Prosecutors' Office Namyangju Branch (Chief Prosecutor Park Shin-young) indicted two individuals in their 20s, identified as A and B, on charges of false accusation and obstruction of justice on June 26. Another individual in their 20s, C, was also sent to trial on charges including abetting false accusation.

C, who was serving a prison sentence for charges including indecent assault, fabricated a fake assault case in early December of last year to avoid being transferred to a different correctional facility.

The scheme exploited the fact that inmates can remain in their current facility if they are subject to additional trials or investigations.

C sent letters to A, a junior acquaintance, and B, a friend of A, asking them to participate in the scheme by framing C as a suspect in an assault case, with A acting as the victim and B as a witness.

Following this, A submitted a complaint to the police accusing C of assault, and both A and B provided false statements during police questioning.

The Guri Police Station in Gyeonggi Province referred the case to the prosecution at the end of January. However, upon receiving the case, the prosecution requested a supplementary investigation.

The prosecution had received a tip-off that the case was a fabrication. By investigating the informant and conducting searches and seizures, the prosecution secured records of C's prison visits and mail correspondence to verify whether there had been communication between C and the group.

Ultimately, the additional investigation revealed that the assault case was entirely fabricated.

A prosecution official stated, "We will actively respond to crimes that disrupt the judicial system and ensure that the prosecution of the case is handled thoroughly so that sentences commensurate with the severity of the crimes are handed down."
