An American tourist who was rescued after being swept away by high waves at Naksan Beach in Yangyang-gun, Gangwon-do, has sent a thank-you letter to the Sokcho Coast Guard.
According to the Sokcho Coast Guard on June 30, the American tourist, who was rescued at Naksan Beach on June 23, recently sent a letter of appreciation to the Coast Guard through the Korea Tourism Organization.
In the letter, the tourist stated, "I sincerely thank the Coast Guard officers who jumped into the sea without hesitation to rescue me during that dangerous moment," adding, "I will never forget this incident, and I will long remember the warm help and kindness I received in Korea."
Previously, on the afternoon of June 23 at 3:30 p.m., an American tourist, identified as A (56), and his daughter were swept away by high waves while at Naksan Beach.
Two citizens, including a 19-year-old identified as B, witnessed the incident and headed into the water to rescue A after notifying the Coast Guard.
When the Coast Guard arrived at the scene, A's daughter and one of the citizens who had jumped into the water had already managed to get out on their own, but A and B were unable to escape due to the high waves.
In response, officers from the Naksan Coast Guard Substation put on safety equipment and jumped into the sea to reach the two individuals.
They then carried out a swift rescue operation, safely bringing both people back to the shore.
Footage of the rescue was later released on the Sokcho Coast Guard's social media channels, including YouTube and Instagram.
The Coast Guard believes this letter is particularly meaningful as it conveys sincere gratitude for the swift on-site response and the organization's commitment to prioritizing the lives of citizens and tourists.
Lee Woo-soo, Chief of the Sokcho Coast Guard, said, "Hearing that they returned to their daily lives safely, and receiving such a message of gratitude, has been a great source of strength for the officers who participated in the rescue," adding, "We will continue to respond swiftly anytime and anywhere to protect the lives of citizens and tourists."
