SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won announced today (June 29) that the group plans to invest approximately 1,000 trillion won in AI data center projects and about 1,100 trillion won in semiconductor supply expansion projects within South Korea.
During the National Report Meeting on the Three Mega Projects for South Korea's Great Leap Forward, held at the Blue House and presided over by President Lee Jae-myung, Chairman Chey stated that SK will continue to invest an average of over 100 trillion won annually in the domestic market over the next 10 years.
Chairman Chey further explained that by rapidly building large-scale AI data centers, the company aims to export intelligence rather than just products and establish a domestic intelligence market.
Led by SK Telecom, SK Group plans to construct AI data centers with a total capacity of 15GW.
The plan is to first build 5GW of capacity in units of 0.5 to 1GW across various regions nationwide, and subsequently expand by an additional 10GW, taking into account factors such as power, land, and water supply.
To address the surge in demand for memory semiconductors driven by the AI boom, the company has also decided to significantly accelerate the investment schedule for SK Hynix's production lines.
Chairman Chey stated that SK Hynix will move up its Yongin cluster plan—originally scheduled for completion in 2045—by 12 years. He added that the company will expedite investments of approximately 600 trillion won in Yongin to increase DRAM production and about 100 trillion won in Cheongju to boost NAND production.
Furthermore, noting the need to create new production bases to resolve memory supply shortages, he added that the company will invest 400 trillion won to establish a new cluster in the southwestern region, which is expected to meet requirements for large-scale land, power, water, and human resources.
