As the United States and Iran engaged in armed clashes for the second consecutive day on June 28 (local time), putting the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at risk, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi visited neighboring Iraq to emphasize the necessity of upholding the agreement.

Following his meeting with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein in Baghdad on the same day, Araghchi noted during a joint press conference that "tensions and conflicts have escalated due to the incidents that occurred in the Strait of Hormuz over the past two days."

He further urged, "All parties must refrain from interfering with the measures Iran is preparing to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and must adhere to the signed MOU without deviating from its intent."

Araghchi emphasized that under the MOU, Iran must secure control of the strait and remove obstacles for it to "return to its pre-war state" within 30 days, adding that "in accordance with Article 1 of the MOU, the war must end on all fronts, including Lebanon."

He also stated, "All countries in the region must re-examine security in the Persian Gulf, and a new framework must be established with the participation of all regional nations, without the intervention or interference of extra-regional powers."

Regarding the ongoing armed conflict between Israel and the militant group Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, Araghchi demanded, "The U.S. government, representing the Zionist (Israeli) regime, has a responsibility to stop their attacks and withdraw from occupied territories as promised in the MOU."

Araghchi added that after coordinating with Iraqi authorities, it was confirmed that a portion of the funeral proceedings for the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, scheduled for early next month, will be held at a holy site in Iraq.
