Foreign Minister Cho Hyon held a meeting with Indian Minister of External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar at the Foreign Ministry building in Seoul today (June 24) to discuss key bilateral issues as well as regional and international affairs.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Cho welcomed Minister Jaishankar, who is visiting South Korea for the first time in two years. Cho noted that the two governments have been smoothly implementing various projects across economic, social, and cultural sectors following President Lee Jae-myung's state visit to India in April.
Minister Jaishankar responded by emphasizing the need to substantively carry out the follow-up measures to the summit, aiming to qualitatively elevate the "Special Strategic Partnership" based on the friendship between the two ministers that has continued since Cho's tenure as Ambassador to India.
Minister Cho highlighted the "Korea Week" event currently being held at the Indian Prime Minister's Office this week as a prime example of the successful implementation of summit follow-up measures. He also briefed the Indian minister on the "Korea-India Substantive Cooperation Team," which was launched within the Foreign Ministry this past April.
The two ministers shared their assessments of the situation in the Middle East and supply chain issues, and exchanged views on these matters.
Both sides agreed on the importance of the prompt and safe reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the free and safe navigation of all vessels for both security and the economy. They committed to maintaining close communication and continuing to participate in international efforts to this end.
Minister Cho explained the South Korean government's efforts toward peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula and expressed his hope for India's constructive role, given its ongoing diplomatic communication with North Korea, in creating an environment conducive to peace on the peninsula.
Minister Jaishankar is scheduled to attend the Jeju Forum, a diplomatic and security event held on Jeju Island, alongside Minister Cho.
