Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Murdering Ex-Partner After Breakup

A man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for murdering his ex-partner with a weapon in front of her daughter after she ended their relationship.

The Daejeon District Court handed down the 20-year sentence to the defendant, a man in his 60s identified as A, who was indicted on charges of murder.

A is accused of murdering a woman in her 50s, identified as B, with a weapon at her villa in Gongju, South Chungcheong Province, at approximately 4:40 p.m. on January 2.

Investigations revealed that after B ended their relationship, A prepared a weapon in advance and traveled from Seoul to Gongju to commit the crime.

At the time, A arrived at B's villa unannounced while B and her daughter were inside.

According to the investigation, B, who had been stabbed, tried to block A and push him away until the very end to prevent him from entering further into the home, fearing for her daughter's safety.

A claimed he was in a state of diminished capacity, stating, "I was heavily intoxicated at the time and cannot remember the moment of the crime at all," but the court rejected this argument.

The court stated, "Considering that the defendant wrote a suicide note at his residence in Seoul and traveled by intercity bus to the victim's home in Gongju, it cannot be concluded that the defendant lacked the ability to judge the situation before and after the crime."

The court further criticized the act, saying, "The mental and physical suffering the victim must have felt, and the pain inflicted upon the surviving family members due to her death, are immeasurable."

B's daughter, who witnessed the crime, attended the trial and was seen in tears.

Addressing the daughter, the court added, "Although you will face long and painful days ahead, I want to tell you to live happily as your mother would have wished, keeping her heart in mind, and to go meet her much later in the future."
