A project to localize the production of generators that create electricity from biogas derived from food waste and livestock manure is now underway in earnest.
The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment and the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute are holding a forum on the localization of biogas power generation equipment today (June 15) at the Samkyung Education Center in Yongsan-gu, Seoul.
Biogas is generated when organic waste—such as food waste, sewage sludge, and pig manure—is decomposed by microorganisms, and it consists mainly of methane and carbon dioxide.
Because the methane content in biogas varies depending on the type of waste used as raw material and it contains impurities such as hydrogen sulfide, power generation equipment utilizing it must possess high corrosion resistance and be equipped with automated control functions.
Due to these technical complexities, South Korea currently relies on imports for its biogas generators.
In response, the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment has decided to invest 36.6 billion won by 2029 to localize components for biogas generators and develop an intelligent, biogas-dedicated power generation system.
