Han So-hee and Jeon Jong-seo’s "Project Y" opened at No. 2 at the Korean box office.
According to the Korean Film Council’s box office tracker on the 22nd, "Project Y" drew 24,404 moviegoers nationwide on its Jan. 21 opening day.
That puts it behind "Once We Were Us", which extended its reign at No. 1 for an 11th straight day with 41,618 admissions. While advance ticketing was neck and neck leading into release, the day-of turnout favored "Once We Were Us" by nearly two-to-one.
"Project Y" follows two friends dreaming of a different tomorrow in the heart of a glittering city who get entangled in a high-stakes heist involving dirty money and gold bars worth 8 billion won. The pairing of same-age stars Han So-hee and Jeon Jong-seo has fueled buzz, though early reactions from the Busan International Film Festival and press screenings were mixed. All eyes are on whether general audiences will respond differently now that the film is in theaters.
