A man in his 50s has been sentenced to prison for assaulting another person, leaving them permanently blind, after a dispute triggered by the victim allegedly "staring" at his wife.

The Ulsan District Court's Criminal Division 11 (Presiding Judge Park Dong-gyu) announced today (June 23) that it has sentenced the defendant, identified as A, to two years in prison on charges of aggravated assault.

In July 2023, A grabbed a man in his 50s, identified as B, by the collar, knocked him to the ground, and kicked him in the face at a parking lot in Yangsan, South Gyeongsang Province.

As a result of the assault, B sustained severe injuries and, despite undergoing multiple surgeries after being rushed to the hospital, suffered permanent blindness in one eye.

It was reported that A stated he became angry because B was looking at his wife and daughter-in-law, leading to a confrontation that escalated into the physical assault.

The court stated, "While it is evident that the victim has suffered extreme physical and mental pain, the defendant has not sought forgiveness or made efforts to compensate the victim." The court added, "We also took into account the defendant's prior criminal record, which includes prison sentences and suspended sentences for violent and fraud-related crimes."
