Man Drives Truck into Military Base Gate After Reaching Settlement with Wife's Former Affair Partner

A man in his 30s who drove a truck into a military base gate while heavily intoxicated, threatening to report a soldier who previously had an affair with his wife to his superior, has received a suspended prison sentence.

Judge Kim Soo-jung of Criminal Division 2 at the Suwon District Court's Yeoju Branch sentenced the man, in his 30s, identified as A, to three years in prison, suspended for five years, and ordered him to perform 500 hours of community service on charges including violation of the Military Bases and Military Installations Protection Act and drunk driving.

According to the investigation, A went to a military base in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, at around 1:00 AM on June 14 and demanded entry, but was refused.

A is accused of then driving his 1-ton truck straight into the guardhouse gate, smashing it open.

At the time, A's blood alcohol concentration was 0.169%, well above the threshold for license revocation.

While there were no casualties, the military base gate was damaged, causing approximately 5.5 million won in property damage.

The investigation revealed that A had previously received a settlement from the soldier who had an affair with his wife and had promised to keep the matter confidential.

The court reprimanded A, stating, "Not only did he break through the front gate of a military facility, but he also continued to cause a disturbance."

However, the court explained its sentencing reasons by noting, "We considered that he has no prior criminal record other than one past conviction for drunk driving and that he has a family to support."
