KBO Commissioner Heo Koo-young Nears Third Consecutive Term as Board Recommends Him as Sole Candidate

KBO Commissioner Heo Koo-young has practically secured a third consecutive term.

The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) announced that during its fourth board of directors meeting for 2026 held today (October 27), it resolved to recommend incumbent Commissioner Heo as the candidate for the 26th commissioner.

The KBO stated, "The board deliberated on Commissioner Heo as the sole candidate and decided to recommend him to the general assembly as the next commissioner candidate with the consent of at least three-fourths of the registered directors."

It added, "The KBO General Assembly plans to deliberate on the agenda for appointing candidate Heo Koo-young recommended by the board," explaining that "in accordance with Article 10 of the KBO Articles of Association, if at least three-fourths of the registered members vote in favor, candidate Heo will be elected as the 26th commissioner and serve a three-year term starting in 2027."

Commissioner Heo, a former player, served as manager of the Cheongbo Pintos and a coach for the Lotte Giants before working as a baseball commentator. In March 2022, he became the first person with a professional baseball background to head the KBO.

In November 2023, he was re-elected unanimously at the general assembly, successfully securing his second term.

If Commissioner Heo is elected as the 26th commissioner, he will become the third KBO commissioner in history to secure a third consecutive term, following former Commissioners Park Yong-oh (12th to 15th terms) and Koo Bon-neung (19th to 21st terms).

The KBO's decision-making bodies consist of the general managers meeting—a gathering of each club's general managers—the board of directors composed of chief executive officers, and the general assembly involving club owners.

The KBO General Assembly is the highest decision-making body and makes the final determination on matters handled by the board of directors.
