A person in their 60s who collected more than 120 million won in insurance payouts by forging medical certificates from past hospitalizations has been sentenced to prison.

Chuncheon District Court Judge Park Dong-wook announced today (October 13) that A (62) has been sentenced to one year in prison on charges of violating the Special Act on the Prevention of Insurance Fraud, falsifying private documents, and uttering falsified private documents.

A was indicted on charges of fabricating documents to make it appear as though they were receiving inpatient treatment—despite not actually being hospitalized—from November 2023 to February of this year, collecting a total of over 120 million won across 43 claims from insurance companies.

According to the indictment, A was diagnosed with lung cancer in June 2022 and received inpatient treatment at a clinic in Songpa-gu, Seoul, between August and September of the same year.

Although no further inpatient treatment was received at the clinic, A scanned and stored previously issued documents on a computer, then altered the document titles, hospitalization periods, and treatment details to forge 211 documents.

After printing the fabricated documents, A took pictures of them using a smartphone camera and uploaded them to insurance company applications to claim the payouts.

Judge Park stated, "The nature of the crime is severe given the methods and details, and the duration, frequency, and amount acquired are all significant," adding, "The defendant has neither restored the damage caused to the victims nor reached a settlement," thereby handing down the prison sentence.

However, considering A's health condition and other factors, the judge did not order court custody.
