It has been confirmed that some of the IP addresses that recently launched hacking attacks against commercial banks also attempted to access the servers of KakaoBank and K Bank this year.
Previously, after hacking damage occurred at Shinhan, KB Kookmin, and Hana Banks, financial authorities shared the IPs used in the attacks with the financial sector and ordered inspections. The inspection results revealed that access attempts were also made against internet-only banks.
The IP addresses that attempted to access the servers of KakaoBank, K Bank, and Toss Bank—which was confirmed yesterday—are all identical. However, it is reported that there was no damage as the attempts were blocked through security systems.
The number of IPs identified by financial authorities as hacking attempts stands at 28 so far.
The Financial Supervisory Service stated, "There were 33 IP addresses that attempted hacking, but excluding duplicate addresses, the number is 28. We have distributed these IPs to the financial sector along with some country information."
Authorities believe that hackers of unknown nationality used IP addresses from various countries to bypass tracking, probed multiple services within financial company systems, discovered vulnerabilities, and launched concentrated attacks.
As of yesterday, the locations of the IP addresses span across 12 countries. However, the Financial Supervisory Service explained, "In some cases, the country of origin cannot be determined, and even when a country is identified, there is a possibility of bypassing."
The government is concerned that personal information leakage damage is spreading to the industrial, government, and public sectors.
[President Lee Jae-myung : Now, using artificial intelligence, even those without special skills can easily carry out hacking. Please promptly concentrate the necessary human resources to minimize damage.]
The National Investigation Headquarters of the Korean National Police Agency announced that it has converted the financial sector hacking cases into a formal investigation under charges of violating the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection, etc., and has formed a dedicated investigation team consisting of 28 members across four teams.
