The death toll from the massive floods in Nepal has surpassed 1,000.
The Associated Press reported that Nepal's Disaster Management Authority stated the death toll from the floods had risen to 987.
Including 16 deaths reported on the Chinese side, the total number of fatalities stands at 1,003.
The number of missing persons increased to a total of 4,462, including 3,916 in Nepal and 546 in China.
Nepalese authorities are making all-out efforts to rescue up to estimated 900 missing people believed to be trapped inside tunnels of hydroelectric power plants in the affected areas.
The Nepal Disaster Management Authority stated that an estimated minimum of 933 workers are isolated inside the tunnels of around 6 hydroelectric power plant sites within Nepal.
Local rescue authorities are reportedly working to access the insides of the tunnels to check the locations and conditions of those trapped.
Prime Minister Balendra Shah of Nepal posted on social media, "Our country is facing an unimaginable and heartbreaking natural disaster," adding, "It is extremely difficult to fully grasp the scale of damage to human lives, property, and infrastructure."
He further added, "Despite difficulties due to severe weather, rugged terrain, and ongoing risks, we will move forward with the determination to protect the lives of our citizens."
