Administrative procedures are currently underway to raise the floor area ratio (FAR) for industrial land within the Samsung Electronics Pyeongtaek Campus.

According to Gyeonggi Province on the 19th, the provincial government recently received and is reviewing a proposal from Pyeongtaek City to amend the industrial complex plan for Samsung Electronics.

An industrial complex plan amendment is reviewed by the provincial governor and then approved following deliberation by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Industrial Location Policy Committee.

The amendment includes raising the floor area ratio of the industrial site (A1-1) within the Pyeongtaek Campus from the previous 350 percent to 490 percent.

This is part of follow-up measures after the government designated the Samsung Electronics Pyeongtaek semiconductor plant as a "National High-Tech Strategic Industry Specialized Complex" in July 2023.

Special complexes are granted a special exemption allowing the floor area ratio to be raised by up to 1.4 times.

Currently, two fabs (P5-1 and P5-2) are under construction on the A1-1 site at the Pyeongtaek Campus with a target completion date of 2030. Samsung Electronics plans to build these fabs as three-story structures instead of the previously planned two stories if the floor area ratio is increased.

Considering that a two-story fab houses four cleanrooms for semiconductor production, a three-story fab could accommodate six cleanrooms, which is estimated to boost production output by about 1.5 times.

An official from Pyeongtaek City stated, "The increase in the floor area ratio is a special privilege granted by the government to help companies with national high-tech strategic technologies enhance their competitiveness," adding, "Barring any unexpected circumstances, this industrial complex plan amendment is expected to go through the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's deliberation in October and be finalized by November."

The Samsung Electronics Pyeongtaek Campus is a single industrial complex spanning 3.9 million square meters in Godeok-dong, Pyeongtaek City, with three fabs currently in operation.
