Restaurants that violated the Food Sanitation Act, such as storing expired products or maintaining unsanitary kitchens, have been caught by authorities.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) announced that it inspected 4,624 restaurants jointly with local governments from June 22 to 26, catching 93 businesses that violated the Food Sanitation Act.
For this inspection, timed for the summer season, the MFDS investigated not only delivery restaurants preparing and selling items like red bean shaved ice and ube desserts, but also highly recognized eateries, including Michelin-starred restaurants.
As a result, 48 out of 2,904 delivery restaurants were caught.
The most common violation was failing to undergo health checkups at 21 locations, followed by 13 establishments that violated facility standards, such as lacking lids on waste containers.
Cases of violating sanitation standards, such as unsanitary kitchens and failure to wear sanitary caps and masks, as well as violations of operators' compliance duties, such as storing and selling products past their consumption expiration dates, were also confirmed.
The MFDS also inspected 1,720 popular restaurants and caught 45 of them.
