Chinese National Arrested After Threatening Man With Weapon at Osan Restaurant

A 30-year-old Chinese national has been arrested by police after chasing and threatening a man with a weapon in broad daylight in the middle of the city.

The Osan Police Station in Gyeonggi Province arrested a 30-year-old man, surnamed Park, on charges of special intimidation and assault.

Park is accused of assaulting a 40-year-old Chinese acquaintance, surnamed Choi, at a mala tang restaurant in Gwol-dong, Osan, at around 3:50 p.m. today, and then chasing after the fleeing Choi with a weapon while shouting, "I will kill you."

The two are acquaintances who reportedly met about two years ago as a restaurant employee and a customer.

Police determined that Park asked Choi to lend him money, and when Choi refused, Park felt ignored and committed the crime.

Park also damaged restaurant property during the altercation.

Police received a report stating, "A Chinese person is trying to kill someone with a weapon," and issued a Code Zero.

Code Zero is the highest-level emergency response issued when incidents such as murders or weapon threats occur, requiring the fastest possible dispatch.

Deploying three patrol cars, police arrived at the scene just three minutes after the report, discovered Park chasing Choi, and arrested him on the spot.

Police subsequently secured the weapon discarded by Park through a search of the surrounding area and obtained a confession from him.

Police are reviewing the application of special intimidation and assault charges against Park.

Special intimidation is established when multiple people display force or threaten someone with a weapon to instill fear.

If it goes beyond mere intimidation and the intent to kill and execution of preparatory acts, such as procuring a weapon in advance, are recognized, attempted murder charges may apply.

Police plan to decide whether to request an arrest warrant by considering the severity of the crime and the suspect's risk of flight or reoffending.
