Prosecutors have requested a prison sentence for a man in his 20s who was put on trial for carrying out acts of terror, such as pouring soy sauce in front of victims' doors, as part of a so-called private retaliation service.
During the trial held today (July 16) at the Seoul Southern District Court, presided over by Judge Seo Hyo-jin of the 7th Criminal Division, prosecutors demanded a two-year prison sentence for the defendant, surnamed Jeong, who is charged with intimidation, trespassing, and property damage.
Jeong is accused of working as an operative for a private retaliation service agency. Between April and May, he allegedly poured soy sauce and posted printouts containing personal information on the front doors of three victims, and sprayed red graffiti on their walls.
Investigations revealed that Jeong received payment from the agency in exchange for carrying out these acts of terror.
In his closing argument, Jeong's defense attorney stated, "The defendant has confessed to the crimes and is deeply reflecting on his actions. Please take into account that he was merely a low-level operative for the organization and faced economic hardship due to a difficult upbringing."
The attorney further requested, "Considering his young age and high potential for rehabilitation, we ask for a lenient sentence so that the defendant can return to society and live a sincere life."
Jeong said, "I am reflecting deeply while thinking of the victims. I would like to say that I am sorry."
The first-instance sentencing is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on August 20.
