The police special investigation team conducted searches and seizures at seven locations, including the office of the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency commissioner, yesterday and secured the mobile phones of three individuals, including former Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station Chief Kim Cheol-woo.
They also seized the work notebooks used by these individuals. It is reported that the team is focusing on analyzing the seized items to determine whether higher-level police officials intervened in the inadequate investigation of the Jang Yoon-gi case.
The police special investigation team plans to summon and question Superintendent B, who was the head of the detective division at the Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station at the time, this afternoon.
The team is also concentrating its investigative efforts on proving charges of evidence destruction through additional questioning of Inspector A, the initial investigation team leader who was arrested as one of the key suspects in this case.
The second hearing of the first trial for Jang Yoon-gi is scheduled to be held at the Gwangju District Court tomorrow morning.
During the first trial held on June 22, Jang Yoon-gi admitted to most of the charges in the indictment. However, it is reported that he effectively denied the charges related to the intent of sexual assault, stating that he would "state his position after reviewing the evidence."
At that trial, the prosecution announced that it would present evidence covering the two days from May 3, when Jang Yoon-gi committed the crime against a 20-something foreign coworker, until the murder of the late Lee Chae-won.
The evidence is said to include CCTV footage from the time, dashcam footage from a parked truck, and videos of a realistic doll with damage to the neck and chest area.
The cable ties seized by the prosecution from Jang Yoon-gi's father, Inspector Jang, are also expected to be submitted as additional evidence in this trial.
