While rain fell across most of the country overnight, excluding Jeju Island, intense rainfall of 20 to 40 mm per hour was recorded in the Jeolla and Gangwon regions early this morning, July 9.
In particular, Damyang in South Jeolla Province and Imsil in North Jeolla Province, both under heavy rain warnings, saw nearly 70 mm of rain in a single hour. Damyang has recorded over 90 mm of rainfall so far.
Pyeongchang in Gangwon Province also experienced 66 mm of rain per hour.
Emergency disaster alerts were issued for these areas, as well as Muju in North Jeolla Province and Cheongyang in North Chungcheong Province, advising residents to stay away from riverbanks and to exercise caution.
Heavy rain advisories remain in effect for parts of the central region, the Jeolla region, and the northwestern inland areas of North Gyeongsang Province.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety has been operating the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters at Level 1 since yesterday afternoon. As of 11:00 p.m. yesterday, two houses and one greenhouse were flooded, and 7.4 hectares of farmland were submerged.
In the North Chungcheong, South Chungcheong, and North Gyeongsang regions, 140 people from 128 households have temporarily evacuated to nearby village halls and senior citizen centers to escape the heavy rain and potential landslides.
In Jeongseon, Gangwon Province, soil erosion led to the closure of a road in Sukam-ri, Bukpyeong-myeon, in both directions.
A total of 30 passenger ships across 24 routes, including those connecting Jindo and Jukdo in South Jeolla Province, and Gunsan and Eocheong in North Jeolla Province, have been grounded. Additionally, three flights have been canceled at Cheongju and Jeju airports.
