When police arrested Jang Yoon-gi on May 5, the day the high school girl murder case occurred, they conducted an emergency search of his SUV, which was used in the crime.
However, SBS confirmed that on May 6, the day after the crime, the police returned the vehicle to Jang's father, who is currently serving as a police officer.
The vehicle, which Jang used to stalk the victim, the late Lee Chae-won, before murdering her, was handed over to his family within a day without even being seized as evidence.
Later, the investigation team asked for the vehicle's location during a phone call with Inspector Jang, under the pretense of checking the dashcam.
Regarding why the vehicle was not seized, the police explained that they determined the vehicle had no direct relevance to the crime and that there was no need to seize it as they had not found the dashcam's SD card.
It was also confirmed that in the search and seizure report written at the time, the police noted, "It was confirmed that there was no evidence to seize, so no seizure was made."
However, the prosecution later conducted an additional search and seizure, discovering a previously used dashcam in the trunk of the vehicle, which contained audio of Jang related to sexual offenses.
Furthermore, it was belatedly revealed that during the search of Jang's residence, the police only took two photos of two sex dolls along with the evidence footage, and even then, they failed to include any records related to the "sex dolls" when applying for an arrest warrant before transferring the case to the prosecution.
