▲ South Korea's Yoon Su-jung and her teammates celebrate after she scores an equalizer during the women's football group stage match between South Korea and North Korea at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games at Shizuoka Stadium Ecopa in Fukuroi, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, on Sept. 21.
The group draw for the final Asian qualifiers to determine the spots for the women's football tournament at the 2028 Los Angeles (LA) Olympics will take place on the 12th.
According to the Korea Football Association (KFA) today (the 5th), the group draw for the final LA Olympics women's football qualifiers will be held at 4:00 p.m. Korea Standard Time on the 12th at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) House in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The number of participating countries in the women's football tournament at the LA Olympics has increased from 12 at the 2024 Paris Games to 16.
Asia has been allocated 2.5 berths.
The final Asian qualifiers will feature the teams that advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2026 AFC Women's Asian Cup.
The eight countries will be divided into two groups of four teams each, playing home-and-away league matches (six matches per team), with the top team from each group securing a ticket to LA.
The matches will be held in two-game series during the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) women's international match windows in April (19, 24), October (7, 12), and November–December (November 29, December 4) of 2027.
The runners-up from each group will face each other in a home-and-away playoff (February 28, March 4, 2028), and the winner will advance to the inter-confederation playoffs to clash with Argentina from South America.
The draw for the final qualifiers will be conducted by dividing teams into pots based on the FIFA rankings announced last month.
Pot 1 includes Japan (5th) and North Korea (12th), Pot 2 includes Australia (15th) and South Korea (17th), Pot 3 includes China (18th) and Chinese Taipei (38th), and Pot 4 includes the Philippines (39th) and Uzbekistan (51st).
