Regarding the "special counsel bill on allegations of fabricated indictments," which the party is pushing to pass during a plenary session of the National Assembly today (November 5), Democratic Party of Korea Floor Leader Han Byung-do said, "If investigative authority granted by the sovereign people was used to cajole statements and distort evidence, those responsible must be held strictly accountable."
Floor Leader Han stressed this during a policy coordination meeting held at the National Assembly today, stating, "The special counsel bill on fabricated indictments will be tabled at the plenary session today."
He stated, "Through the parliamentary investigation held in April this year, specific circumstances of politically motivated prosecutors' fabricated investigations and indictments have come to light," adding, "Now, we must verify the facts through an investigation and clearly uncover everything from the perpetrators to the command and reporting structure."
He continued, "To ensure that the purpose of uncovering the truth is not clouded, the revised bill has deleted not only the provisions related to the dismissal of prosecution but also the right to demand transfers of existing cases," adding, "The special counsel is not intended to intervene in ongoing trials, but to uncover whether illegal acts such as coaxing statements and distorting evidence occurred during the investigation."
Regarding the ruling People Power Party's plan to launch filibusters against contentious bills if the special counsel bill is tabled at the plenary session, Han criticized, "While paying lip service to people's livelihoods, mortgaging the public's lives and the nation's future for political strife is irresponsible behavior," urging them to "first fulfill the fundamental duties of a public party."
The special counsel bill to investigate allegations of fabricated indictments by the prosecution under the Yoon Suk Yeol administration passed the National Assembly's Legislation and Judiciary Committee yesterday, led by the Democratic Party.
The scope of the special counsel's investigation includes breach of trust in the development projects of Daejang-dong, Wirye New Town, and Baekhyeon-dong; Ssangbangwool Group's remittance to North Korea; bribery involving sponsorships for Seongnam FC; alleged manipulation of government statistics under the Moon Jae-in administration; the fatal shooting of a South Korean fisheries official in the West Sea; and the forced repatriation of North Korean fishermen.
