In the election for the National Women's Committee chair of the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), first-term lawmaker Rep. Kim Nam-hee, who is classified as being aligned with the pro-Lee Jae-myung and pro-Kim Min-seok factions, was elected after defeating two-term lawmaker Rep. Moon Jeong-bok of the pro-Jung Chung-rae faction.
The DPK's Central Party Election Commission announced this today (November 3), stating that it had elected 10 national committee chairs covering women, seniors, youth, college students, persons with disabilities, labor, farmers and fishermen, the Euljiro Committee (protecting the underprivileged), the social solidarity economy, and small business owners.
The election for the National Women's Committee drew keen intra-party interest as the chair sits on the Candidate Recommendation Committee for the 2028 general elections, with observers both inside and outside the party viewing the contest as a factional struggle between the pro-Kim Min-seok faction—which follows the party's pro-Lee Jae-myung lineage—and the pro-Jung Chung-rae faction.
Rep. Kim, a lawyer-turned-politician who served as the head of the party's police reform task force following the inauguration of party leader Kim Min-seok, posted on social media immediately after the announcement, saying, "I am truly grateful."
Rep. Moon, who served as a supreme council member under former party leader Jung Chung-rae, also took to social media to state, "Congratulations to Rep. Kim Nam-hee on being elected chair of the National Women's Committee," adding, "I fell short. I wish for the growth and development of the Women's Committee."
Rep. Kim Dong-ah was elected chair of the Youth Committee, Rep. Moon Geum-joo for the Farmers and Fishermen Committee, Rep. Min Byung-dug for the Euljiro Committee, and Rep. Park Jeong-hyun for the Social Solidarity Economy Committee.
Former lawmaker Lee Sang-ok was elected chair of the Seniors Committee, while Lee Dong-won, former senior vice chair of the DPK National College Students Committee, was chosen to lead the College Students Committee.
Park Ho-seok, president of the Korea Para Table Tennis Association, was elected chair of the Committee for Persons with Disabilities, Choi Chul-ho, head of the Korean Federation of Electric Power Labor Unions, was elected chair of the Labor Committee, and Lee Seung-hoon, former policy expert at the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, was elected chair of the Small Business Owners Committee.
The election for the national committee chairs was held over three days starting November 1, and the newly elected chairs will serve a two-year term.
