Members of a syndicate that laundered tens of billions of won in proceeds from illegal gambling sites and distributed dummy bank accounts have been sent to trial.

The Gwangju High Public Prosecutors' Office announced today that it has indicted six individuals, including a ringleader in his 20s identified as A, on charges including violations of the Act on Regulation and Punishment of Criminal Proceeds Concealment and the Electronic Financial Transactions Act, while indicting another individual, B, without detention on the same charges.

They are accused of intentionally concealing the origins of funds by receiving approximately 27.1 billion won in criminal proceeds from illegal gambling site operators between August 25 and November 2.

The suspects used a method of repeatedly transferring the received funds across 15 accounts under other people's names in multiple installments, and then re-depositing them into accounts designated by the gambling site operators.

They also pocketed a total of 120 million won, amounting to 0.6 percent of the laundered amount, as commissions.

Dividing roles such as ringleader, fund manager, and account recruiter, they committed the crimes in a cell-like structure where they communicated via social media without meeting in person.

Among the seven suspects forwarded in custody, the prosecutors' office confirmed a discrepancy between the criminal facts stated in the arrest warrant for B and the actual charges forwarded.

B was initially arrested on charges of transferring bank accounts to a third party, but upon reviewing the case records, it was determined that B participated in the money laundering through a different method, leading to the indictment without detention.

An official from the Gwangju Public Prosecutors' Office stated, "We are reviewing not only the investigation results but also the legality of the investigative process," adding, "We will strictly decide on whether to institute a public prosecution to protect the human rights of the public."
